2013: Todd Zehner '87
Todd Zehner, a 1987 graduate of St. Johns Country Day School, has been honored as the school’s 2013 Outstanding Alumnus.
Todd started early in his life making contributions to St. Johns. He entered St. Johns as a 10thgrader and not only made contributions in the classroom and sports, but he also worked several summers with the maintenance staff to improve the school’s physical plant.
Todd earned team MVP and All-Conference recognition during eight varsity seasons of basketball, baseball and cross country at St. Johns.
He was the first member of the 1000 point club, thanks to JoJo Cambron who wants an Assists Board put up in the gym with his name on top!
He was the first two-time winner of the Captain Borries Cup Award.
A 1991 graduate of the University of Florida, he earned his BA in history and was a member of the university’s 1989 SEC Championship Basketball Team. He earned his MBA from the University of North Florida in 1996 and coached basketball at University of Florida and Florida Tech in Melbourne.
Todd returned to St. Johns to coach the varsity boys’ basketball team from 1997-2000. He was elected to the inaugural class of the St. Johns Hall of Fame in 2007 and most recently took over as head football coach, leading the team from an 0-10 record to 6-4, the best season in the history of the program.
Probably the most notable reason that Todd has been named Alumnus of the Year is that through all of his successes both in university and in his career, Todd has never forgotten where it started.
A lot of individuals think of college as their best years, but Todd has remembered that his success started at St. Johns. Todd has often stated “were it not for St. Johns giving me so many opportunities, I have no idea where I would have wound up.”
Todd has never forgotten the lessons he learned at St. Johns both in and out of the classroom, and he truly loves the school. Before coming back to work at St. Johns, he was on the Board of Trustees, helped with the Athletic Hall of Fame, golf tournament, and anything else that was needed.
Todd is now an Assistant Headmaster and Director of Finance and Operations at St. Johns as well as the head football coach. He and his wife Katy have a son, Cade, who is a St. Johns student.
