Good afternoon, we hope everyone is settling back into the routine of school after our time off. Here are this week's news and announcements from St. Johns Country Day School:

Calendar Updates

The Master Calendar has been updated to reflect the hurricane makeup days the Headmaster announced in an email last week. (Please let us know if you didn't get that email.) If you have subscribed to the school calendar on your phone, it will update automatically. You'll also now find them on the Master Calendar at sjcds.net, and on the fridge-friendly downloadable version available on the Parents Portal.

In case you missed the email, in order to meet requirements set by the State of Florida regarding how many school days we must hold each school year, St. Johns will need to make up four days. These dates follow:

  • Sunday, January 28th, St. Johns Celebrates!, will be a required school day.
  • We have added Tuesday, May 29th, Wednesday, May 30th, and a half day on Thursday, May 31st.

Calendar Subscription

Wondering how to subscribe to the school calendar on your phone, computer, or other electronic device? It's easy, and in just a few clicks or taps you can be assured that you always have the most recent school calendar and event info right at your fingertips. To get started, visit sjcds.net/news on your computer, phone, iPad, etc., and, next to the vertical calendar, click on the RSS button-- it's gray and has radio wave looking things on it. Clicking on it should open a popup. Just hover over the green "iCal" buttons to see your options. Select "Add to Default Calendar App" to automatically subscribe.

Talent Show Signups Now Open

The Interact Club talent show, benefiting Rise Against Hunger, will take place on October 14 at 7:00 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. Signups are currently open for faculty members and Middle and Upper School students. Please see Mrs. Velasco in U17 to sign up.


Heinrich Learning Resource Center After School Hours

The Heinrich Learning Resource Center is open daily after school until 5:30 p.m., providing a safe and supervised study space for Middle and Upper School students. All Middle and Upper School students are welcome. Please note that the library closes at 5:30 p.m., so please arrange pick-up for your student before then. Birthday Books

Does your student have a birthday in September? Honor their birthday with a birthday book for the Heinrich Learning Resource Center! For a minimum donation of $25.00, participating students may choose a brand new book from the library, receive a dedication plaque in the book, have his or her name in the library catalog system, and be the first to check out the book from the library. If your student has a birthday this month, check the Tuesday folders or your mailbox for more information, or reach out to Library Clerk Leslie Glenn. Thank you for helping our library grow with books students want to read!

Get Involved with the Parent-Teacher League!

Looking for a way to get involved with St. Johns, to help out or be a part of your child's school experience? Come learn more about the Parent Teacher League (PTL) and PTL opportunities for involvement. The PTL meets the first Wednesday of each month, from 8:15 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. in the Lower School Library. Mark your calendar and plan to join us for the next meeting on Wednesday, October 4, 2017.

College Tour Trip Coming Soon!

The College Counseling Office would like to invite Upper School students to attend this year's college tour, taking place October 9-10, 2017. This two-day, overnight trip will take students to four Tampa-area colleges: University of South Florida, University of Tampa, New College of Florida, and Eckerd College.

The goal is to give students the opportunity to experience a variety of different college campuses: large and small, public and private, etc. St. Johns' College Counseling staff will guide students through the campus visit experience-- from what to wear to which questions to ask-- and getting a taste of what campus life would be like at each school.

The cost for this trip is $200, which includes bus transportation, hotel (1 night), 3 meals, and snacks. Permission forms were emailed to each Upper School parent and student, and additional copies are available in the College Counseling Office. Signed permission forms and the trip fee are due by Friday, September 22. Questions? Please reach out to Director of College Counseling Justine Worthington at jworthington@sjcds.net.

Spartan Athletics Code of Conduct
The new school year has begun and our Athletics season is underway. Interscholastic sports are an important part of student life and growth at St. Johns Country Day School, and we strive for an Athletics program that encourages student-athletes to develop good sportsmanship. With this in mind, all parents should model good sportsmanship by demonstrating fairness, respect, and self-control. As parents attending St. Johns sporting events, please be responsible for your words and actions, ensuring they meet the high standards we set for our Spartans. In this way we will best be able to work together to develop students who demonstrate the values that set us apart as St. Johns Spartans.

Spirit Store

September hours for the PTL Spirit Store follow:

Monday & Friday 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.
Wednesday 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Tuesday & Thursday 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

All proceeds from the Spirit Store sales support school supplies and activities.
