Field Trips
Preschool
On-campus experiences bring learning to life for Pre-K3, Pre-K4, and Kindergarten students. This fall our local fire department brought a fire truck to campus, let the students explore the truck, and answered questions from our littlest Spartans. St. Johns will continue experiential learning opportunities, such as these, throughout this semester and beyond.
Grades 1-5
Lower School students have two field trips during the academic year that are grade-level specific. These trips are experiential by nature, but are carefully connected to curriculum through appropriate learning in class and reflection upon return. The Head of Lower School, Dean of Lower School, Director of Global and Experiential Education, and teachers work closely together to create the best field trip opportunities possible. Examples of these trips include a candy-making class at Sweet Pete’s (Grade 1), Gainesville's Cade Museum (Grade 2), a Jacksonville City Tour (Grade 3), Mission San Luis and the State Capitol in Tallahassee (Grade 4), and Kennedy Space Center (Grade 5).
Middle and Upper School
Middle School and Upper School also offer field trips throughout the year. Field trips are often tied to what students are learning in a particular subject. However, some of our field trips also highlight collaboration and service. Middle School field trips taken over the past year include Beyond King Tut, learning about the school and students at the North Florida School of Special Needs, and continuing our annual endangered animal project and study with a trip to the Jacksonville Zoo to focus on manatees. Examples of Upper School field trips taken over the past year include a water treatment plant, the State Capitol in Tallahassee, Guana Tolomato Matanzas preserve, and PARKing Day in San Marco.
