Overnight Trips
Building on our curriculum-guided field trips in all divisions, St. Johns Middle and Upper Schools also offer experiential overnight trips.
Grade 6
Grade 6 students experience a 2-day, 1 night trip to promote team building and bonding. By going off campus and getting away from the daily expectations and stresses of school life, students can focus on one another and create a cohesive atmosphere that lasts throughout their Middle School years and beyond. By integrating a short overnight into Grade 6, students will be better prepared for the overnight trips taken in Grade 7 and Grade 8.
Grade 7
Grade 7 students spend 5 days and 4 nights in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. While team building and bonding will continue to be a focal point, students will experience more days and nights away while learning about nature and how we interact with it and each other. For most students, the highlight of this trip is our whitewater rafting day. Other highlights include quarry rock climbing, high ropes courses, and canoeing. Students journal and reflect on their stay, creating a deeper feeling of connection to one another and their experiences.
Grade 8
Grade 8 students will encounter the best that Washington, D.C. has to offer. With a solid blend of history, nature, and fun, every student will find something that interests them. Students visit one or two of the Smithsonian museums, the Holocaust museum, and tour the monuments. They will have the opportunity to see the workings of the Capitol and experience the fast pace of our nation's capital. In addition to the history and excitement in the city, students will love hiking in Shenandoah National Park and rafting on the Shenandoah River. Grade 8 students will return to St. Johns excited to learn even more about our nation’s history and ready to continue their school year.
Upper School
In the Upper School, overnight trips, including international trips, are proposed and led by faculty and coaches at the School. Exciting opportunities will vary from year to year. In the past, trips have included highlights of Spain, a conservation trip to Yellowstone National Park, and an England Cricket Tour. These have engaged and excited our students about new topics and locations.
