Florida's Bright Futures Scholarships Expand Funding

The Florida Bright Futures program will pay for 100% of tuition and fees at Florida public universities, starting with the summer 2017 semester. The recent change, announced earlier this month, expands the highest award level, Florida Academic Scholars, to cover 100% of tuition and fees at Florida public universities. This one-year expansion also includes a $300 stipend per semester to cover books and other expenses. Students attending a nonpublic college or university will receive a comparable amount, though those numbers are not yet available.

This expansion, enacted under the Appropriations bill, will expire after one year unless the Florida Senate passes legislation to make it permanent.

Award amounts for Florida Medallion Scholars remain the same at $77 per per credit hour per semester.

"Fifty-five percent of the St. Johns' Class of 2017 were offered Bright Futures scholarships," said Director of College Counseling Justine Worthington. "We look forward to working with families of members of the Class of 2018 and beyond to help them continue to achieve great success."
