Williams Comes Out Ahead in His 3rd Bee

The annual St. Johns Spelling Bee for students in Grades 5-8 took place this afternoon with twenty-four students participating. Preliminary Bees took place earlier this school year within each grade, and all the students have done a tremendous job both preparing for and in the Bees. Qualifying for the St. Johns Bee were:

Representing Grade 5: Bailey Connor, Dominique Clark, Olivia Clark, Liam McNulty, Addison Kipnis, and alternate Jordan Bliffen.

Representing Grade 6: Corbin Plunk, Drake DuBois, Wyatt Hollingsworth, Alyssa Walker, Tegan Olschewske and alternate Sergio Lopez Diaz.

Representing Grade 7: Erik Williams, Hadi Basil, Shane Reaves, Grant Cassady, Nate Towers and alternate Cali Ann Holshouser.

Representing Grade 8: William Bryie, Sofia Conde, Ashlyn Rose, Laney Valdivia, Jack Ensell, and alternate Jonah Friedman.

Lasting a whopping 33 rounds, the spellers took turns spelling words as presented to them by Grade 8 English teacher Mrs. Thea Burke. By the 19th round, competition had narrowed to three finalists: Dominique Clark ‘27, Shane Reeves ‘25, and Erik Williams ‘25. After the 33rd round, Williams came out ahead for his third consecutive win and will continue on to the County Spelling Bee in January 2020. Congratulations, spellers!
