Strong Start for Spartan XC

Strong Start for Spartan XC

The Spartans kicked off their 2021 cross country season at the Cecil Field Summer Classic on Friday night.

The first races were the Middle School 2500m and the Open 5k. St. Johns' Middle School runners

excelled and we had a lot of Personal Records (PR's) set in the 2500m run. They were run by Bodie Brafford '26, FinleyCate Davis '27, Griffin Dubnansky '26, Drake Dubois '26, Wyatt Hollingsworth '26, Finn Kent '27, Arlo Kistner '27, Sergio Lopez '26 and Reyden Riveria '26. In the Open 5k there was no exception as two more PR's were set there by Javier Coll-Román '23 and Teague Dunagan '27. Great job ladies and gentlemen.

Varsity girls showed grit and determination on a tough course which saw Freshman Rebecca Stratton continue her streak of personal bests with an 8th place finish and a time 21:33 out of 300 competitors. Congrats to all the ladies on a great race.

The Boys Varsity race was also tough and grueling and newcomer Graham Myers ran to a new PR of 17:27 and an 8th place finish in his first race as a Spartan. Timmy Jackson '24 also had a breakout performance and ran a big PR of  23:36. Congrats men on a great race.

The Elite Race had a lot of the state's top runners competing and that included our very own Matthew Stratton '22. Matthew finished 2nd in the race and set a new PR of 15:21 breaking his old school record by 18 seconds. Great job Matthew!

Spartan harriers' next race is at Ridgeview High School on September 4. Come out and root for your fellow Spartans!
