Grade 5 recently participated in an essay contest sponsored by The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Florida. Students were given the subject of Thomas Jefferson and the prompt, "What are some of Thomas Jefferson's greatest accomplishments and how are they seen in our lives today?"
Beginning before Christmas break and finishing the Thursday following break, students researched Thomas Jefferson and then followed the writing process steps to finalize a typed, one-page essay. Each participating school submitted their top three essays for judging by the sponsor committee.
On Tuesday, January 22nd, Grade 5 students went to the Main Jacksonville Public Library, where they saw a Thomas Jefferson re-enactor. The actor spoke about the importance of Jefferson in our country's founding, the importance of the writing process, and he invited numerous students to participate with his props.
