Where creativity takes shape

Every student from Pre-K3 through Grade 12 engages with visual art as a key part of their education.

Our artists experiment with painting, drawing, printmaking, collage, sculpture, and ceramic, and their work is showcased across campus and recognized annually in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, the nation’s most prestigious recognition program for creative teens.

At St. Johns Country Day School, art is more than an elective — it’s an essential part of learning, self-expression, and discovery. From the first spark of creativity in Lower School to portfolio-ready mastery in Upper School, the visual arts program encourages students to explore, take risks, and tell their stories through a wide range of mediums and techniques.

Art Showcase

Lower School

In Lower School, art nurtures curiosity and confidence. Students are encouraged to explore freely and express themselves through diverse media, including watercolor, ceramics, weaving, and printmaking. Through projects inspired by artists and cultures from around the world, they learn to observe closely, think creatively, and grow fearlessly.

Middle School

Middle School art students begin to see themselves as creators and thinkers. Through painting, drawing, sculpture, and design, they develop both skill and voice. Projects are infused with art history, creative problem-solving, and reflection, helping students learn to appreciate art not just as a subject, but as a way of understanding and interpreting the world.

Upper School

The Upper School visual arts program deepens technical mastery and creative exploration. Students refine their individual style through courses in design, studio art, and digital media, culminating in the AP Studio Art Portfolio. Through critiques, collaboration, and experimentation, they gain the confidence and craftsmanship to take their art to the next level.

Visual Arts Fellowship

From imagination to expression, every student is an artist.

The Visual Arts Fellowship gives students hands-on experience and mentorship in professional art practices, from portfolio development and digital editing to exhibition and volunteer opportunities. Fellows build their resumes, strengthen their portfolios, and connect with the local arts community.

Nichols Family Art Gallery

Located at the heart of campus, the Nichols Family Art Gallery serves as a creative hub for students, faculty, alumni, and local artists. This light-filled space showcases the power of artistic expression and celebrates the vibrant visual arts community both within and beyond St. Johns Country Day School.
